What you get

A diamond painting is a grid of tiny resin “drills”, one per square, pressed onto an adhesive canvas. This tool turns your picture into that grid. Each square gets a symbol, each colour gets its DMC number, and the list on the right counts the drills of every colour. The PDF has an overview page, a key and enlarged chart pages you can read comfortably.

Choosing a size

Detail needs drills. A face that is only 30 drills wide will look blocky; at 100 drills or more it starts to look like the photo. With 2.5 mm square drills the sizes work out as below. The largest chart the tool makes is 500 × 500 drills, which is 125 cm on a side.

Getting a clean chart

  • Crop tightly. Fill the frame with the subject. Background drills cost as much time as the face.
  • Limit the colours. Twenty to thirty colours are plenty for most photos. More colours mean more bags and more single scattered drills.
  • Check the list against your supplier. If a DMC number is not available as drills, open the chart in the editor and swap it for a close neighbour.
  • Clean up stray squares. “Edit square by square” opens the editor, which can find and merge isolated single squares.

About the colours

Colours are matched on screen to DMC reference values from an openly licensed dataset. A screen cannot show a faceted drill exactly, and drills from different makers vary, so treat the codes as the place to start and compare real drills before committing to a large piece. DMC is a trademark of its owner; this site is not affiliated with DMC. See Licenses.

Frequently asked questions

Is this diamond painting pattern maker free?

Yes. The chart, the drill counts and the PDF are free, with no account and no watermark.

Does it make the sticky canvas?

No. It makes the chart and the shopping list. A diamond painting also needs a canvas with an adhesive layer. You can use the chart to plan a custom piece, to check a design before ordering a custom kit, or to work on your own adhesive canvas.

What colour codes does it use?

DMC codes, the same numbers printed on most drill bags. Each colour in your picture is matched to the nearest DMC colour on screen. Not every DMC code is sold as drills by every supplier, so check your supplier’s list and swap a colour in the editor if one is missing.

How big will the finished piece be?

Square drills are 2.5 mm, so there are four drills to a centimetre. A chart 120 drills wide is 30 cm (about 11.8 in) wide. The tool shows the finished size for your chart.

How many drills should I buy?

The list gives the exact number of squares per colour. Buy more than that, because drills are sold by the bag and a few are always lost or misshapen: ten to twenty per cent extra is a common allowance.

Square or round drills?

The sizes on this page are for 2.5 mm square drills, which sit edge to edge and fill the canvas. Round drills are about 2.8 mm, so the same chart comes out roughly 12% larger.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The picture is converted in your browser and is not sent anywhere.
